After discovering that coffee was part of my digestive issues a few years ago, I completely stopped drinking it and over time got un-hooked from caffeine. I was drinking a large thermos and travel mug of coffee every morning and it was tearing up my stomach. Now even when I have tried to drink smaller amounts, my body isn't used to it, and reacts poorly, so it really isn't worth it for me. I think coffee is great for people who it agrees with and by no means advocate that everyone should stop drinking it, however if it affects your skin, digestion, energy, etc. and you are looking for alternatives- they do exist!
Tea is the obvious answer. However, herbal tea steeped in water does not necessarily fulfill that coffee craving and satiating sensation that drinking a mug of Joe has. There are a lot of coffee and dairy free lattes out there, but a lot of times they are filled with sugar, thickeners, and other sneaky things that negatively affect my digestion as much as coffee. Making your own superfood lattes is a great satiating and clean alternative to coffee.
If you haven't tried my Adaptogenic Matcha Latte, that is another great option. Matcha, like chocolate, has caffeine which is great for those who need a caffeine boost without coffee. This latte has energizing maca in addition to the caffeine in clean, raw chocolate, so it is sure to get you through an early morning or long afternoon. It also has nourishing coconut butter, beautifying and strengthening collagen peptides, and creamy cashew milk.
2 tbsp Coconut Cacao Butter (or 1 tbsp coconut butter + 1 tbsp raw cacao powder)
1 cup nut milk
1 pitted date
1 packet or serving of Collagen Peptides - I use this Vital Proteins one (eliminate if vegan)
1 cup hot water
1 tsp maca powder
Boil water on the stove while adding all ingredients to a blender. Add water once it is ready. Blend until latte is formed. Pour and enjoy. Makes about 1.5 mug fulls for a typical mug.
